Equality & Empowerment

Health has always been about more than drugs or treatments—it’s also about equality of access and of  representation. This March, people all over the world are celebrating a subsection of the population  whose health (among other things) has been compromised through a longstanding marginalization:  women.

Women make up one of the few minorities that are numerical majorities. They typically outnumber men  when it comes to demographics in most communities. Despite that, the oppression and marginalization  of women has taken place in many a society for some time now. This March marks the best time to  bring that and related issues to the forefront. In the Philippines, it is often referred to by the  government as National Women’s Month and represents the time of year when women’s advancement  becomes most important in the public consciousness.

The past month may have been National Heart Month, but few people realize that March has been  named the National Women’s Heart Health Month too. It became so under the tenure of yet another of  the country’s female presidents, under the prodding of the Philippine Heart Association.

In the Philippines, the Women’s Month Celebration has since served as a venue to highlight women’s  achievements and discuss continuing and emerging women’s empowerment and gender equality issues  and concerns, challenges, and commitments. The celebration focuses on concrete activities that are  aligned with national and international instruments and treaties such as the Convention on the  Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Platform for Action, the Philippine  Plan for Gender-Responsive Development (1995-2025), the Framework Plan for Women, and the  Sustainable Development Goals. Women’s rights and chances to fulfil their full potential are crucial for achieving gender equality and addressing a wide range of global development targets.

A Special Kind Of Love

Valentine’s Day is mostly considered as an international festival celebrating the feeling of love. More  than just being a day for the lovers, the day holds bigger importance. It is a day to show and express our  love to anyone. When we love our parents, we fail to express it sometime. So, the day is a chance to  express our love for our parents, for our family members, and for our friends and closed ones.

However, Valentine’s Day celebrates the bond and the relationship between people. It is a day which  teaches us how we should express our love, care and respect for anyone who is important in our life. It  helps us to feel happy about our loved ones. It also shows us the importance of happiness we feel when  we are around the ones who matter to us. While Valentine’s Day is celebrated in most countries,  different cultures have developed their own traditions for this festival. In some parts of the world  Valentine’s Day is observed as a day for expressing love between family members and friends, rather  than that of romantic couples. Some traditions include leaving gifts for children and others  include acts of appreciation between friends. It was lovely, I spent it with my friends.

Friends are people who keep their faith in us even when everyone else seems to be losing theirs in us.  Friends are those people who understand those problems of ours that our family, parents or partners do  not understand. Thus, every Valentine’s Day every person should thank their friends. Do things for them  that they would like and appreciate and would make them feel good.

On this Valentine’s Day, do something that would make people around you feel happy. Do something for  the little kids around you who do not have anyone to take care of them. Similarly, a person can go to a  old age home and do something for the old people who also do have anybody left in the world to call  their own. Valentine’s Day is all about showing and expressing your love and doing things that would  make someone feel that they are loved. Spreading love is what Valentine’s Day is all about.
